ADRA India’s Education Program believes that
education is the key to development. We have
made a commitment to contribute to meeting the
Millennium Development Goal #2: to achieve
universal primary education, so that “by 2015,
children everywhere, boys and girls alike,
will be able to complete a full course of
primary schooling”. We acknowledge that we
have an enormous challenge as we work in South
Asia where 31.5 million children remain out of
school.
But we have committed to facing up to the challenge, one
school at a time, as We know that practical steps such as providing
classrooms to a village school that previously had to
turn children away, can now welcome new bright minds who
are going to shape the very future of India. We also
understand that household wealth is the single strongest
determining factor influencing schools attendance in
India, where children from the poorest households are
least likely to attend primary school. Because of this,
we are working with families in these communities by
supporting them with income generating activities, so
that they have the opportunity to send their children to
school and benefit from the immeasurable value of
education. |

Nellore is a southern most District of Andhra
Pradesh neighboring State of Tamil Nadu. The
district has predominant coast line as its border.
Nellore District coastal villages are highly prone
to disasters such as cyclones. Whenever, a low
pressure forms in the Bay of Bengal Sea, it takes
the border of Nellore for crossing. The borders of
Nellore coastal villages are totally marooned in sea
water, because of floods from the upland areas and
air flow from the sea. |

The result is that the fisher families lose their
households and livelihoods. This situation is
recurring usually every year from October to
January. There were ten blocks in Nellore District
affected by the tsunami in 2004. Among them, ALLUR
was the most hit by the disaster. Allur received
maximum damage in terms of damage of infrastructure
including schools and people’s houses as well as
people’s life. As per the data provided by the
District Education Officer (DEO), Nellore District,
there are 282 schools available in all the ten
affected blocks in the district in which 228 are
primary and 54 are upper primary and higher
secondary schools. Among all the schools, 83 schools
require additional class rooms. ADRA India
assessment team has conducted needs assessment for
20 probable schools in Allur Block along with the
Mandal Education Officer (MEO) and has selected 5
schools for the proposed project. The project will
construct 15 classrooms covering the five schools.
Each of the proposed class room will have 20’ X 16’
foot classroom and 10’ foot wide verandah. It will
have 3 windows for good light and ventilation and
the class room would consist of two shelves. The
class room will have one black board on the wall and
the verandah will have two black boards. Each
classroom could accommodate 35-40 students. |

By providing the infrastructural support and
capacity building of the teachers and with the
support of the community the project will promote
the targeted five schools to become child friendly.
The Teaching Learning Materials (TLM) will be
purchased and will be supplied to all the schools.
The teachers of the schools will be trained on child
friendly school concept specifically of making their
burden less and also to give individual needs of the
children maximum possible. |
 |
|
The project will facilitate the formation of School
Development Committee (SDC) in each five targeted schools.
Children’s club is an innovative concept attempted
in retaining the enrolled and reenrolled children in
schools and ensuring that they complete at least
secondary education. Keeping this in mind the
project will form children’s club in each targeted
schools. |
