| India
is a land of stark contrasts, where the divide between the rich
and the poor is maybe
more prevalent here than anywhere else in the
world. The media in general focus mostly on
the “new economic power” that is India,
however this brings a reality to the general
public that unfortunately does not represent
the vast majority of the population. More than
two thirds of
India’s 1.1billion people, live
close-to or below the poverty line. These people
don’t have ready access to clean water, education,
safe & suitable habitations, affordable healthcare,
employment/business opportunities and all the other
benefits of civic society that only the minority of
middle and upper-class society have. If these issues
continue to be overlooked the media, India’s wealthy
minority and the international community at large,
then more than 700,000,000 people will be overlooked
and forgotten also. For these reasons, as well as
many others, ADRA India exists.
In India, ADRA was officially registered in 1992
under the SOCIETIES REGISTRATION ACT OF 1860. ADRA
India has being growing rapidly since then, striving
to meet the massive needs that India’s undeveloped
and developing communities have. The Tsunami in 2004
was a big challenge for us and we were forced to
expand quickly to help as many affected communities
as possible. Since then we are expanding our
development program both geographically and
thematically in the sectors of Health, Livelihood,
Education and Refugees to name a few.
I hope you will enjoy your visit and as you learn
more about who we are and what we do, may this
experience touch your hearth in a way that you will
be willing to join hands with us to help make this
world a better place for all.
Sincerest Regards,

Paulo Lopes
